Starting Kendo

The first thing one will learn in Kendo is proper bowing technique and etiquette. Our head instructor, Miyata-sensei, says that Kendo begins and ends with the rei, or bow. We want all our members to understand the utmost important concept within Kendo is respecting each other and ourselves.

For the latest cost figures to start at Berkeley Kendo dojo please see the 'About Kendo' page.

Before your visit, please contact the dojo to ensure that we will be having practice that day. We request that all interested individuals watch a minimum of 2 classes before beginning Kendo, but more is recommended. This way, a beginner will have a better understanding of Kendo, our practices, and the expectations that both a beginner has of Kendo and that we have of the beginner.

On your first practice, please wear appropriate clothing, as you will sweat. If there are any questions or concerns, please feel free to ask any of our members once you have arrived.

If you have any further questions, please send them to info@berkeleykendo.org.
